Centennial Claims De La Payback and State Crown
What sweetened the deal was that they knocked off those dang De La Salle (Concord) Spartans, the six-time mythical national champions - the program that once owned a national-record 151-game win streak - who broke their heart with a 37-31 victory in the same game last season.

Centennial holds off DLS
A desperate kick return attempt on the game's final play ended 34-yards shy of the end zone and Centennial-Corona defeated the Spartans 21-16 in the California Interscholastic Federation Division I state championship bowl game Friday at the Home Depot Center in Carson. "(Centennial) is a great football team," De La Salle defensive coordinator Terry Eidson said."  We played to the last play of the game. I'm very proud of our kids." The game was a rematch of the 2007 CIF Division I championship game which De La Salle won 37-31.

Twist of fate providing DLS-Centennial rematch
After it suffered a 23-21 loss to Don Bosco Prep on Sept. 27, there weren't many that expected De La Salle to even make the trip to a state bowl game in 2008. And yet that's where the Spartans will be today when they face Centennial-Corona, not in the "featured" Open division, but the Division I championship bowl game at 8 p.m.

DLS's Wayne perseveres
Blake Wayne doesn't exactly cut a John Wayne presence until you hear him speak, or better yet, watch him play. He is the Spartans' offensive efficiency expert, the conduit through which the team's precision veer option offense operates with uncanny efficiency.

State's system of picking prep bowl games wrong
California was the last state in the U.S. to hold high school football state championships, and the 2008 season has provided us with a big reason why: more unhappy teams than happy teams, even among some of the schools that actually earned bowl berths.

Section Commissioners Stay in a State of Silence
So just how did the section commissioners who voted for Grant come to the conclusion the Pacers' strength of schedule was better than De La Salle's? Don't ask, because they won't tell you. Of the four section officials contacted on Monday, all four declined to comment,

De La Salle isn't top dog in CIF state bowls
In a secret ballot vote by the CIF's 10-section commissioners, the team that hasn't lost to a California school north of Fresno since 1991 was not considered the strongest representative of section champions throughout Northern California. That distinction was given to Grant-Sacramento.

De La Salle stops Pittsburg to win NCS title
Kylan Butler had 186 rushing yards and the De La Salle defense gave up just 34 yards on the ground as it won its 17th straight NCS title with a 34-10 Division I victory at Dublin High School on Friday.

Pirates-Spartans:  As it should be
The Pirates will return to the North Coast Section championship game for the first time since 2003 tonight when they take the field against De La Salle, a team that is seeking its 17th consecutive NCS title. "I've always said, If you want to win an NCS championship, you're going to have to go through De La Salle," Pittsburg coach Victor Galli said. "And you want it to come down to this situation."

Foothill's second visit to DLS gets no better
If the Falcons were looking for a sign that the second visit to Concord was going to be any different than the first, then the second play of the game wasn't very friendly. Spartans running back Terron Williams-Ward took the handoff and burst into the middle of the Foothill line, only to re-emerge on the other side and sprint 62 yards for a touchdown. De La Salle never really looked back as it rolled to a 42-7 win.

Foothill gets DLS rematch
The few teams that have had limited success against the Spartans have done so with a strong running game. That has not been Foothill's strength this year.

De La Salle's fast start puts away Deer Valley
De La Salle scored touchdowns on each of its first five possessions and eventually rolled to a 52-7 Division I quarterfinal win over visiting Deer Valley."I thought we came out of (the bye week) well," De La Salle coach Bob Ladouceur said. "We came out aggressive. The defense stopped them, and we moved the football. I was really happy with how we played tonight."

De La Salle Earns Number One Seed for North Coast Section Playoffs
Spartans get first round bye and will face winner of Deer Valley / Berkeley game at home on Friday November 28, 2008 at 7:00pm.

DLS tops California with late TD
The California High football team took the opening kickoff and put together a 16-play scoring drive, rushing the ball on every down. But the Spartans have a running game and it happened to be what saved them in a 21-14 victory.

De La Salle blasts way to EBAL Throne
The Spartans gained more than 500 yards of total offense as they rolled to a 44-7 East Bay Athletic League victory.  And in doing so, De La Salle accomplished something it hadn't done since 1997 - clinched a league championship.

De La Salle survives Monte Vista
In the 2nd half, the DLS defense saw a lot more of the high-powered Monte Vista offense than it would have liked. But a sack by Spartans defensive end Dylan Wynn was Monte Vista's last gasp as De La Salle survived with a 45-35 victory. By Chace Bryson - cctimes.com

Spartans tops Amador Valley on off night By Chace Bryson - cctimes.com
Two pivotal special teams plays saved the visiting Spartans as they survived a 34-14 East Bay Athletic League victory in which they were not very sharp. "I really wasn't too happy with how we played," De La Salle coach Bob Ladouceur said.

De La Salle Routs Foothill - Sends Message to EBAL
It may not have needed to send a statement to the rest of the EBAL, but Foothill took the brunt of it. Midway into the 2nd quarter, the Spartans scored 56 unanswered points en route to a 63-7 blowout of the visiting Falcons.

DLS gets it together; romps past Livermore - Ben Enos - cctimes.com
The Spartans finally got out to a fast start, building a 14-0 lead after one quarter and a 41-0 lead by halftime, and the defensive front seven put together its first real consistent effort of the season as De La Salle beat visiting Livermore 48-0

The Spartans scored four times and had more than 240 offensive yards in the third quarter alone as they blew open an 11-point halftime lead and cruised to a 56-10 rout of Granada in the two teams' EBAL opener.

Don Bosco Goes the Distance Over De La Salle - By Mitch Stephens - (full story at MaxPreps.com)
Patrick Murray's 20-yard field goal with 10 seconds to play lifted Don Bosco Prep to the biggest high school football triumph in New Jersey history with a stunning 23-21 victory at the nation's most storied program.

De La Salle luck runs out on Don Bosco's late field goal
Ironman kicker Patrick Murray, after missing an extra point that would have tied the score earlier in the fourthquarter, nailed a 19-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining to give Don Bosco Prep a 23-21 win over De La Salle.

DLS Survives....Again!!
For the 2nd straight week, DLS pulled out a game at the end, this time 27-21 over a bigger and more physical Loyola of Los Angeles squad led by one of the more impressive athletes you'll see at the high school level, junior tailback Anthony Barr. (full story at MaxPreps.com)

De La Salle looking for identity - By Chace Bryson - (Full Story at CCtimes.com)
In each of its first 2 games, the Spartans have been forced to come from behind and pick up game-winning scores late in the 4th quarter. The 2 victories succeeded in keeping DLS atop the state rankings but have left the Spartans feeling a little bittersweet..

De La Salle Survives - By Mitch Stephens
Top-ranked and six-time mythical national champion De La Salle squandered a 21-0 lead, but got a two-point conversion run by reserve holder Terron Williams-Ward with 5:43 remaining to pull out a 29-28 victory over host Serra.  (full story at MaxPreps.com)

Cal High Falls short
Bellevue's vaunted wing-T offense and precise execution was too much to overcome as Cal fell just short, losing 34-27, but Cal might have opened some eyes on a regional stage. (full story)

CIF plans to expand bowl games

De La Salle may lose rivalries
Its move to the EBAL will eliminate matchups against BVAL teams. The EBAL has asked the Spartans to shed their quasi-independent status and become a full member of the league, thus leaving just three open dates for De La Salle to schedule high-profile opponents. (full story)
